Sustainability
Small choices, real impact.
At Shanuo, we believe sustainability isn’t something you “add” to a hotel.
It’s part of how you build it. How you live it.
From the materials we choose to the way we welcome our guests, we try to leave things
better than we found them — for the island, for the people, and for the future.
What we do every day
1. We say no to waste.
We recycle everything we can. No plastic bottles. No single-use minis in the bathroom. You’ll find refillable dispensers, water stations, and glass bottles across the property.
2. We say no to air conditioning.
Our rooms are designed to stay naturally cool with smart architecture, fans, and the breeze of the ocean — no need for AC. It’s better for the planet, and honestly, it feels better too.
3. We keep our beach clean — together.
We organize regular beach clean-ups with guests and locals. As a thank you, we offer a free soda or beer for every full bag collected.

How we support the community
1. We buy local and organic.
We source food and materials from local farmers and artisans whenever possible.
2. We listen and learn — and invite our guests to do the same.
We organize tours of the local school and village, offering insight into everyday life in
Zanzibar. We talk about culture, community, and religion with honesty and care — so that you don’t just visit, but understand.
3. We ask for mindful giving.
Instead of giving sweets or money to children, we invite our guests to donate toothbrushes,
school supplies, or health products. We also collect donations for a local orphanage in Stone Town, and support ZAASOS, an animal rescue project, by donating supplies and contributing to their fundraisers.
4. We say no to staged photos.
Out of respect for the community, we ask that guests avoid taking photos of local children,
unless invited by the family.
5. We don’t aim to be perfect. Just honest.
Shanuo is not a luxury eco-resort. We’re a small hotel doing what we can — and always
trying to do better. If you have ideas, questions, or projects you’d like to share, we’re always
happy to listen. Because sustainability, for us, is a shared journey.
